Caroline’s work explores a fragility and fleetingness inherent in life, but particularly felt by women. Using intimate scenes from memory, her work examines the female form, the duality of ageing, and the complexity of maternal relationships.

Growing up amongst generations of women who experienced parental abandonment, the role of mother became a desire for stability.

Caroline’s experience of being a mother has resulted in an introspection about motherhood which sometimes acts as a cloak of invisibility to the true personality of the person wearing it.

There are three distinct environments in Caroline’s work:

The garden and the table are reflective of the social dynamics within the family, the mother figure is often depicted moving unseen carrying and serving.

Whilst during the day is buried by motherhood at night she becomes more extrovert and is depicted drinking, partying.

In contrast the bathroom is a solitary space, the main character is self reflective.

Caroline’s work is concerned with visibility and to this end she works using bright acrylic paint, oil bar and pastel. Caroline uses observational drawings of plants, gardens and interiors to create environments for her characters to live in.
